The 2009 Mercedes Benz S-Class continues to be a leader in the luxury-sedan
market that it shares with the likes of the Audi A8 and the BMW 7 Series. Since
its redesign in 2007, this is the first year there has been any significant
changes. Most of these changes appear in the areas of safety and interior
design. The S-Class is available in the S550 and S600 trims, as well as the high
performance S63 AMG and S65 AMG models.
At first glance, the 2009 S-Class continues to sport the signature Mercedes
grill and hood ornament, but it now also features the fender flares that have
recently been added to the M-Class SUV. The chrome wheels also show some new
styling with the S550 at 18 inches and the S600 at 19.
The interior of the Mercedes S-Class is as beautiful as ever with wood and
chrome accents throughout. Comfort is the word that comes to mind with this
spacious interior that has room for five passengers, including a massive back
seat. The majority of the changes for this year come in the form of
technological features. The console gear shifter has been replaced by a control
stalk on the steering column. You can also operate the automatic transmission
manually with the new shifting paddles on the steering wheel. The technology
continues to impress with the 8 inch command screen on the dash. Options include
massaging front seats and an infrared night vision system.
One of four available engines will be under the hood powering the 2009 S-Class.
They include two V8s and two V12s, and automatic transmissions are standard on
all models. The S550 is equipped with a 382 horsepower 5.5 liter V8 with either
rear wheel or all wheel drive. A 510 horsepower twin turbo 5.5 liter V12 is
under the hood of the S600 model. The two high performance models will obviously
be a little more aggressive under the hood. The 13/20 miles per gallon will vary
slightly depending on which package you decide to go with.
Technology is the key word in the area of safety features as well. The 2009
S-Class continues to offer the Mercedes Pre-Safe system. This system will
tighten seat belts, close windows, and adjust seats when an accident appears to
be unavoidable. The Brake Assist Plus system will increase brake pressure to
help you avoid collisions as well. Other features include active front head
restraints and an electronic stability system.
The $89,000 starting price tag for the 2009 Mercedes Benz S-Class is comparable
to those of its competitors. Drivers will love the power and comfort of this
luxury cruiser. Others, however, may be a little put off by limited
maneuverability in tight spaces. The numerous high-tech features may prove to be
intimidating to some as well. |
