The GMC Sierra 2500HD 2WD is a counterpart model to the Chevrolet Silverado.
First introduced to the American public in 1990, the GMC Sierra 2500HD is a
three-quarter ton, heavy duty pickup truck that competed with the likes of the
Ford F-250 and Dodge Ram 2500. Initially, the full-size truck was fitted with a
300 horsepower 6.0L VORTEC 6000 V8. Generating 360-lbs per foot of torque, the
GMC Sierra 2500 was one of the most powerful trucks on the market. A five-speed
manual transmission or four-speed automatic transmission was originally
available as well.
With impressive hauling and towing capabilities, the GMC Sierra 2500HD was close
to the top in its category. However, concerns were raised regarding the poor
quality of materials used for the interior of the Sierra 2500, and some claimed
that the entire construction of the model was done sloppily. Nevertheless, GMC
countered those naysayers by saying that the pickup was created with superior
materials and was solidly built. Even today, some critics say that the Sierra
2500HD is simply a disappointingly put together pickup.
Rumors have been circulating for the past few years that the GMC Sierra 2500
will be available in a hybrid version. The maker finally confirmed that the
hybrid edition is set to be released for the 2009 model year. The two-mode
hybrid Sierra will feature both electric and gasoline power. Not only that,
regenerative braking will continuously repower the model by storing electricity
in the battery every time the brake pedal is pressed. GMC hopes to improve the
model's sales by implementing the hybrid version, while also making less of a
negative impact on the environment. Even then, some individuals are criticizing
the maker for putting large "HYBRID" badging along the sides of the Sierra,
saying that the decals are self-important.
The GMC Sierra 2500HD 2WD has been featured in many movies and television shows
since its inception. Feature films include Free Willy, Sweet Home Alabama, Final
Destination 3, and A History of Violence. Television shows that have used the
model are Stargate SG-1, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Matlock, Chips, and the
popular teen drama The O.C.
The most recent gossip regarding the GMC Sierra 2500HD 2WD is that it might be
completely discontinued by the maker. Though there has been some concern about
its widespread appeal, GMC claims that it has no plans to cancel production on
the model, reminding the gossipers that they are releasing the hybrid version in
2009.
