The GMC Savana was unveiled in 1996 as General Motors' line of full size
commercial and passenger vans and was the timely replacement of the Rally Wagon.
There will always be a need for large commercial and passenger vans to
accommodate various business and industry needs and this durable vehicle fills
that need better than most. Significant business dollars are not typically
invested in luxury and convenience features for a commercial van to accommodate
diverse driver personalities for varied and undetermined or limited amounts of
time. Commercial vehicles are designed to safely transport and accommodate cargo
and passengers either in combination or exclusively as efficiently, economically
and comfortably as economically feasible and rational. That said, this full size
GMC van could be outfitted with a wide variety of optional comfort and
convenience features should they be desired, with your choice of either a 4.3
liter V6 or 5.7 liter V8 engine.
With little competition in this automotive segment, the Savana was extremely
popular. GMC continued to improve upon the original mechanical and cosmetic
features of their full size van throughout the years. The automatic transmission
was enhanced to provide smoother shifting and greater fuel economy in 1997. In
addition, a few more model configurations were added to the lineup, daytime
running lights became standard, key fobs were redesigned and chrome plated
wheels were added to the list of optional accessories. 1998 models received
safety and security upgrades including a pass lock theft deterrent system and a
mini module driver side airbag. With sales of the Savana taking the lions share
of the commercial van sales, the only changes for 1999 were the addition of new
exterior and interior color choices and a slightly upgraded transmission.
The Savana received an increased trailer rating to go along with the improved
powertrains for Y2K. Changes for the 2001 model year were mostly applied under
the hood with the addition of a Vortec 8100, V8 big block engine. The audio
system was also treated to an upgrade as were the door and ignition locks to
make them stronger. The 2002 through 2006 model years consistently received
upgrades and enhancements including all wheel drive options, anti-lock brakes,
StabiliTrack stability control system and a redesigned interior.
The V6 engine was removed from the Savana lineup for the 2007 model year as the
5.3 liter V8 became the standard for the low end models. This commercial van
fits the bill if you need a traditional full size commercial van with a strong
powertrain and multiple wheelbase and passenger configurations. To help ensure
transportation related tasks are accomplished regardless of the weather, the
optional all wheel drive will keep the GMC Savana going through inclement
weather and rough road conditions.
