The 2009 Dodge Nitro mid-size SUV is a carryover from 2008 and has a new
slightly-higher base MSRP of $21,940. Although new fuel economy ratings are not
yet listed, the 2008 Nitro delivered 16/22 mpg city/highway from the same
engine/transmission team, a 3.7L 210hp Magnum SOHC V6 and a 6-speed auto
transmission with overdrive. New for 2009, is a 4.0L 260hp V6, but is only
available in the top trim level. It will add roughly $3200 to the purchase
price. There are 4 trims available, the SE and SLT/RT 2WD and 4WDs. Seating is
for five and the basic warranty covers all potential problems for 36 months or
36,000 miles.
The 2009 Nitro by Dodge is both distinctive and practical. Its only direct
competition is from the Jeep Liberty and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. All are very
similarly priced, but the Nitro, as is the case with most Dodges, is unique in
its almost-futuristic design standards. It measures a full 22 inches less in
length than the Dodge Durango full-sized SUV, although it is deceptively large
feeling - and looking.
One hot sell point for the 2009 Nitro is the Load-n-Go cargo storage
compartments. This convenient system very efficiently, and quickly, flattens
both the rear seats and the front passenger seat. In just a few seconds, the
vehicle is readied for mass loading. The floor of the cargo area actually slides
outward to project over the rear bumper. This extended floor space is capable of
supporting up to 400 pounds and is very helpful when loading heavy objects.
There is no need for leaning forward into the cargo area and risking - inviting
actually - back injuries.
Interior design offers plenty of luxurious options including your choice between
3 different material bases: cloth, stain-resistant cloth and leather that is
perforated to allow airflow. The seating is quite comfortable regardless of the
covering chosen. Cabin space is super quiet because Dodge has opted to use heavy
amounts of noise-killing materials. Visibility out of the vehicle is rated as
superb from both the front and the rear.
Electronically controlled stability and traction, Trailer Sway Control, side
curtain airbags, electronic braking assistance and rollover mitigation systems
are just a few of the standard safety features on the Dodge Nitro that are
normally reserved as options on most other mid-size SUVs - probably has a lot to
do with those 5-star frontal crash test safety ratings from the NHTSA.
Dodge likes to bring attention to the fact that the 2009 Nitro features very
unique exterior styling. Based as much on practicality as for eye catching, the
styling is definitely bold. The fenders flare outward in an exaggerated showing.
They are joined by otherwise-mostly-squared features that add to the athleticism
of the vehicle. The total package looks and feels bigger than other mid-size
SUVs - a good thing according to most.
The Dodge "MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System" is available and incorporates
radio, state-of-the-art navigation and a hard drive that holds up to 20 gigs of
you favorite pictures, songs, maps and more. You can even rip and burn CDs
directly into the system. Of course, it is also totally voice activated as well.
The 2009 Dodge Nitro offers a lot of fun, practicality, innovation and
dependability - all at a fair price point. |
